Like Singapore, Taiwan gives the impression that the distance between citizens and the military is closer than in Japan. The marathon event held in March on Taiwan’s Beigan Island was guarded by Taiwanese military soldiers.
It is said that the underground tunnels on Dadao Island (大胆嶼) are much more complicated than those on Kinmen Island. On Dadao Island (大胆嶼), a stone monument with the inscription “島孤人不孤, 大膽擔大擔” still stands.

There is a Taiwanese military base in Bold and it is responsible for border security with China. Therefore, only Taiwanese are allowed to land here, and Japanese are not allowed. In Japan, there are no Self-Defense Forces base islands in the Sea of Japan that are accessible to civilians. Even if there is a Self-Defense Forces base island (Iki, Nagasaki Prefecture), it is off-limits.
