It happened in December 2024 at the port of Naha.
The cruise ship’s port of call is here.
The cruise ship was cancelled due to engine trouble….(10Dec2024)
Keelung City Access/Basic Information
1.Airplane: from Japan via Taipei
There are no direct flights from Japan to Keelung City. It is accessible via the airport (Taoyuan International Airport or Taipei Songshan Airport). The airport in Kaohsiung is located almost on the opposite side of the main island of Taiwan.
2.Train / Bus: Transfer once to Keelung City
・Train (ordinary train): about 45 minutes: 41 yuan (about 180 yen)
・Bus: 45 minutes to 1 hour: about NT$45-60 (about ¥202-270)
Both fares can be paid with Taiwanese transportation IC cards such as the Yuyu Card EasyCard).
3.Boat: There are both domestic and international boats to Keelung
I took the train to Keelung and then boarded a domestic ship from there.

Accommodations in Keelung
Taipei has more than three times the number of accommodations and tends to be less expensive. The cheapest price was around 3,000 yen.
I stayed at a B&B here. It was a dormitory room, but there were no other guests on the same day, so it was actually a private room for one person.
Washing machine is free. I hung the clothes on hangers in the room and they were dry after one night. However, the temperature was 4 degrees Celsius in March, so I turned on the heater.

Credit cards from Japanese companies were not accepted.

Taiwan’s manned islands accessible from Keelung Harbor
According to the shipping company information, you should go here anyway after getting out of the station. The map below is taken from their webpage.
Around this red arrow, there were so many passers-by coming in by mistake that the police officers here were dealing with them several times an hour.
I had something to do at this terminal building, but the flight was cancelled that day, and this Taiwanese policeman talked with me for an hour using a translation app. Thank you very much.

There is no shipping service to Taiwan’s inhabited outlying island (Kinmen Island), which is located about 20 minutes by high-speed boat from China. Only air travel is available.
There are two domestic flights that can be taken from Keelung: Nangan Island and Dongyin Island.

Popular cafes and sweets stores in Keelung
Taro dumplings are the best and very cosy.
I visited the store twice. This is a rare bakery that is open until night. It seems that bread is their main product, in case you were wondering.
There were other products using taro, but I didn’t buy them because they looked ordinary.

The taro buns are the best! The price has gone up every year, but in March 2025 it was 55 yuan (about 275 yen) for a pack of 4.
Still a reasonable price, I bought 3 packs. Note that they need to be refrigerated.
I bought 5 pineapple cakes and 5 strawberry cakes. There was no charge for the box. They are individually wrapped.

Famous for its shaved ice and bean flowers. There are plenty of seats and it is not difficult to find a place to eat. I haven’t been there in March because the temperature was 4 degrees Celsius and it was too cold.
Keelung Senki Coffee:
