Kodakarajima(小宝島) Basic Information
kodakara jimaSelection for the remote island study abroad program is conducted through online interviews.
Basically, if the dormitory is full, students will live in private homes, but
the entire village of Toshima has stopped accepting new students into private homes.
This is partly due to the aging population of the island, but there were also various other reasons.
When Ira went to interview,
there were both able-bodied and disabled children in the village of Toshima.
There is diversity in this inhabited remote island.
Like other islands, not all islanders have knowledge about disabilities.
It’s better to place children with knowledge in dormitories.
We want to avoid secondary disabilities caused by stress in children living in remote areas.
The man at the branch office on Kodakarajima Island has IT skills. He was originally an engineer in Tokyo.
He also played a key role in establishing a base station on Kodakarajima Island.

Kodakarajima(小宝島) Education and Schools
Incidentally, until Maharaji, the name of the school on Kodakarajima Island was “Kagoshima Prefecture Kodakarajima Island Tokara Second Academy.”
As mentioned in the video above, the construction of the dormitory was significantly delayed and exceeded the scheduled timeline.
Without permission from the Toshima Village Office, interior viewings are not permitted.
The dormitory’s design is nearly identical to those on other islands.
The dormitory on Kuchino Island in Tokara will be reused as depicted in the manga.
Basically, each person has their own room.
kodakara jimaOriginally, there was a path lined with hibiscus flowers and a lawn here.
That was removed and dug up to build the dormitory.
The construction site was apparently a point of contention among the residents of Kodakarajima.
There is no dormitory here in Maharaji.
The former hibiscus path is depicted.
The residents of Kobashima were shocked.
The scenery changed dramatically.
Unlike in the city, the shock is even greater on an island.
The artwork and setting take this into consideration.
Four hours of interviews at school
I’ve taken over 1,000 photos.
I have signed an agreement with the Toshima Village Board of Education stating that “images must be converted into manga drawings before posting.”
It takes several hours to finish one drawing. I can’t do it in rapid succession. Please read the manga Maharajima.
There aren’t many others like me, a manga artist who has visited dozens of schools on remote islands for research.
Most people who write about travel are able-bodied, after all.
SAGA TAKASHIMAIra has also interviewed education boards in places such as Toshima in Tokyo.
You can tell where to study abroad or move to based on your first impression and intuition.
The key to finding the right fit is to visit as many islands as possible.
The number of immigrants has been gradually increasing every year.
In the background are students studying abroad on remote islands.
And adults who have started salt workshops.
Village-run housing is the basic housing for non-islanders.
Due to the difficulty of constructing new buildings, village-owned housing is the norm. After living there for 20 years, the rent becomes free.
Since there are no rivers on Kobashima, water is supplied by a desalination facility.
There are rare occasions when the school’s water supply cannot be used. This seems to happen when the reservoir does not meet sanitary standards. I didn’t go into detail about this in the video, so I’ll talk about it in my next regular video.
