SG man

About the kanji characters for Hahajima.
“Haha” means mother, and “jima” means island.

It is located two hours away from Chichijima by ferry.
There are also uninhabited islands such as Anijima in the vicinity.
There are many islands in this area that are named after family members.

Schools and villages on HAHAJIMA

School. It’s amazing and incredible that they are able to procure such a large amount of materials from a place that is a 27-hour ferry ride from mainland Tokyo.

I rode around on a moped. Walking alone would have been difficult due to the many slopes and the hot, humid weather.

There are many village-owned houses, but there are also modern houses in the village.

The public telephone was clean and even had a chair. That’s rare.

I was amazed at how well-maintained the lawn was! I heard from someone on another island that the lawns on the school grounds of inhabited islands in Tokyo are maintained frequently.

This is the bridge on HAHAJIMA. It has a unique design.

Roos Memorial Hall

Only this memorial hall retains the architectural style of that time.

[Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.]
This folk history museum is a restored sugar storage facility from the Taisho era. The name “Rohs” comes from the name of a type of stone used in construction, which was discovered by Rolfs, a German who settled on Mother Island at the end of the Edo period and contributed to its development.
Visitors can see how people lived on the island in the past and view traditional crafts.

Transportation on Hahajima

There are mopeds, bicycles, and cars available.

I rented a moped. It was quite rusty. The brakes were difficult to apply, and the body was heavy.

I parked it against the wall several times to prevent gasoline from leaking. The gasoline cost was included in the rental fee.

Cash payment only.

Two of the tunnels on Hahajima seem to be haunted.

I won’t say which tunnels they were, but two of them had a strong pressure. I felt that I should never come here after dark. I wonder if the islanders are okay. As an outsider, I feel like I’m being haunted.

An island with relics from the Pacific War era

There are many highlights.
