Data on Aogashima flights and cancellations in May 2025, and ANA flights to Hachijojima

About the above data.
・Airplane: Haneda (羽田)→ Hachijojima(八丈島)
・Helicopter: Hachijojima(八丈島) → Aogashima(青ヶ島)
During these eight days, there was only one helicopter flight.
There were only three airplane flights!
On May 19, Ira landed on Aogashima via a connecting flight with ANA and a helicopter.
On May 20, Ira left Aogashima (regular ferry).
On May 21, Ira was busy on another island amid heavy rain, so no data is available.

I visited AOGASHIMA from Singapore.
It is a rare inhabited island with a double caldera.
The purpose of my visit was to conduct research for a manga about inhabited islands.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the islanders for their cooperation.
Key Points for Dealing with Flight Cancellations to Aogashima [Helicopter Reservations and Ships]
1: From Golden Week through May, rainy days increase, and the rainy season begins more than two weeks earlier than on the mainland of Tokyo.
2: Heavy rain causes thick fog, resulting in helicopter cancellations (it is not uncommon for helicopters to circle Aogashima three times before returning to Hachijojima).
3: When waves are high, regular ferries may also return to Hachijojima midway to Aogashima, which is not uncommon.
4: Take advantage of the high cancellation rate by timing your visit to Aogashima during the gaps between cancellations.
→ I used this strategy and successfully landed on Aogashima in one attempt, then departed the next day.
*In May 2025, dense fog warnings were issued across Tokyo, and the weather was so bad that driving on the mainland was scary!
It was an unusual period with nine consecutive weekends of rain.
Even in such conditions, Aogashima is a place you can reach if you’re lucky.
A photo of thick fog on Aogashima Island. It’s easy to understand why the helicopter was canceled.

Aogashima, where the usual scenery is completely obscured by thick fog. The same is true for the village, which now resembles Silent Hill.

Due to the thick fog, the humidity remained above 90% for several days in a row. Singapore, where I usually live, has similar humidity, but Aogashima was cooler, so it was comfortable. Because of the thick fog, my hair got wet, as you can see in the photo. There’s no point in straightening our hair. You’ll just be yourself.

The eldest son of a shop owner on Aogashima Island predicted,
“If you don’t leave Aogashima tomorrow, the next opportunity to escape will be a week from now.”
His prediction came true.
Information released in the evening is too late. He seems to be the only one who can make predictions at noon.
He was a person who seemed to be one with Aogashima Island.
You would understand if you met him.
He was a person who had reached a higher level of humanity.

Originally, the helicopter was scheduled to fly on the outward journey
and the regular ferry was scheduled to fly on the return journey,
so even if the helicopter was canceled on the 20th, it wouldn’t have been a problem.
To draw a manga about an inhabited island, We need to photograph the island, the port, and the ship as a set!
Aogashima is a remote inhabited island located south of the Izu Islands.
I flew from Haneda Airport to Hachijojima on ANA, and then took a helicopter from Hachijojima Airport to Aogashima on the same day.
The next day, I took a regular ferry from the port of Aogashima to Hachijojima.
This was the schedule I had set in February 2025. ANA had a sale in February, so I booked my flight for around 9,000 yen, and in March, I was visiting 29 inhabited islands in Taiwan for 27 days. Since my island-hopping schedule was very tight, I had already planned my May schedule by February.
In reality, three months later, I was able to go without rescheduling. I decided the date based on fortune-telling. I’ve been doing fortune-telling since I was a child. The days before and after that date were off-limits. In reality, there were a string of cancellations. It was risky.(・ω・;)
On The Go Map
After landing on Aogashima, it’s time to prepare for the escape.
Mobile data is unavailable in the village areas of Aogashima Island, making it difficult to gather information.
Aogashima Island had no internet connection at all, so I couldn’t even check the weather forecast. I couldn’t even send a message to my family on LINE to let them know where I was.
As a result, I had to ask a police officer standing on the road during a traffic patrol for weather forecast information. The police officer on Aogashima Island commented indignantly, “The reception here is terrible,” but he was interesting and human even in casual conversation. I had a good impression of him.
The eldest son of the family that runs the only store on Aogashima Island seems to have a very high accuracy rate in his predictions.
By noon the day before, some of the islanders already knew whether the helicopter would be flying the next day. It wasn’t in the evening. It was at noon.
Those islanders were the family who ran the only store on Aogashima.
The eldest son’s prediction was very accurate. It was more realistic to make our schedule based on their information.
They predicted, “If you don’t leave Aogashima tomorrow, the next opportunity to evacuate will be a week later,” and it seems that turned out to be exactly right.
Helicopter information for Aogashima Island
On the day I went, the flight was delayed by five minutes, but the helicopter departed and arrived on schedule.

There were only four passengers, including myself. The residents of Aogashima told me that this was quite rare. The plane has a capacity of nine passengers, but the six passengers who were scheduled to board that day all canceled at once, and I, who was eighth on the waiting list, was moved up.
At least 13 people, including the six passengers and seven others, canceled.
I received notification of the upgrade two days before boarding and paid by credit card.
There is a discount for people with disabilities.
