Number of islands in Japan
On February 28, 2023, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan released the number of islands in each prefecture nationwide in its “List of Islands in Japan (Nationwide and by Prefecture).” The breakdown of inhabited and uninhabited islands, as well as the specific names of the islands, are not disclosed.
Setting aside the names of uninhabited islands, I personally visited various locations and contacted the relevant local government offices to confirm the current presence of residents on inhabited islands.
I believe this provides more reliable information than those who create tourist articles or university graduation projects about islands without actually visiting them.
