My Singaporean and Malaysian relatives told me,

Why do people in Kagoshima live on a volcanic island? (Comment after watching footage of Sakurajima erupting)
That’s because they are confident that they can escape quickly if things really get dangerous.
Of the seven islands that make up the Tokara Islands, Suwanosejima is located fourth in the shipping route and is the midpoint. It is the only island with a helicopter route to mainland Kagoshima (advance reservations required; high fees apply).

Island Landing/Escape Difficulty
Among the seven islands of the Tokara Islands, this island is the easiest to stay on (there are shops and newly built private rooms available for rent without meals).

Ira’s comparison of trips to over 460 inhabited islands from Singapore.
The difficulty of the boat trip is ranked second highest on a five-point scale: “☆★★★★.”
During winter and typhoon season, there are about one or two consecutive weeks of cancellations per year.
When the ferry is canceled, it is not possible to travel by small boat.
This is recommended for those who have plenty of time to stay.
In 2023, I was able to visit all seven islands of the Tokara Islands at once for manga research. My schedule was packed every day, so if one flight was canceled, the rest of my schedule would be thrown off. There was a risk of not being able to leave the island. I stayed on Suwanose Island for two nights.

Check out the atmosphere with real footage of departures from each port in Tokara.
It seems that each principal has their own policy, so the atmosphere may change drastically every three years (the minimum term of office is three years). Takarajima was the only one that
felt too different from the others.

On The Go Map
As with Akusekijima, it is safest to request transportation by car from the port to your accommodation.
I actually walked there and back once, but I didn’t feel like doing it again the next day. However, you can’t see the details unless you walk, so I recommend taking a stroll at least once. It might be tough in the summer. Even in March, I was sweating and had to do laundry.

Scenery and villages of Suwanose Island
A village with many slopes. There is a handmade swing. When I visited, this was the only place in Tokara where I saw a swing. That’s why I drew it in my picture.

Ira, who was born in Kagoshima, visited here from Singapore to conduct research for his manga about Mahara Island (an inhabited island).
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Jushima Village Board of Education, the village office, and other related parties for their cooperation in our research.
The only island in the Tokara Islands where volcanic ash accumulates
The mainland of Kagoshima is also an area where volcanic ash accumulates, so items like these are sold at Kagoshima Airport.

It is safer to bring sunglasses and a mask to Suwanose Island. At least for people like me who have some kind of disease or aftereffects affecting their eyes, skin, or respiratory organs, it seems essential. I regularly take antibiotics. I also have chronic sinusitis, so my mucous membranes are weak.
Cinderella is apparently known in Japanese as “Ash-Covered Princess.” Suwanose Island is a inhabited island where people literally cover themselves in ash. The evacuation drills there must be quite different from those on other islands.
The islanders of Suwanosejima.
To summarize…
Are most of the women on Suwanose Island socially awkward and tsundere(hot and cold:ツンデレ)?
The woman who was rude even though she was the one who made the request
This is a story about what I witnessed in the village when I visited.
A mother was scolding her son (presumably for disciplinary reasons), telling him, “You are not allowed to play with other children.”
Then she asked a girl from another family who was nearby, “Please don’t play with him for a while.”
The girl responded with a model student-like question: “How long is ‘for a while’? Three days?”
This child gives the impression of being part of the island exchange program or having a parent who is a teacher. I’ve noticed this tendency among children I see on the island (based on my observations). Her attitude of seeking specific information earns high praise and a positive impression.
The boy’s mother remained silent, staring at the girl, and then left without saying anything.
What? This isn’t a time to be silent! Say something! Answer!
The girl stood there expressionless for a while. Then, after confirming something with another girl, she left for the dormitory.
I’m just an outsider, but I think adults should give specific answers to questions like that.
Don’t you think it’s rude for the person who asked the question to just walk away without answering, regardless of the other person’s age?
People at the guesthouse and in the fields greeted us.
The only man who greeted me. He seemed like someone who had lived on Suwanose Island for a long time. There is a guesthouse with dogs, and he seems to be related to it. I think he is probably the owner. I don’t think anyone related to the guesthouse would feed the dogs.
This is the guesthouse. If you stay here, I don’t think you will be disappointed!
The sign says “Welcome back!” It’s very homey.
It feels more like a guesthouse run by people with a warm personality than a business. Even if you’re a foreigner, you can communicate using a translation app, but this guesthouse only accepts reservations by phone. Don’t worry, though. You can ask the staff at the hotel where you’re staying to make a reservation for you.

Suwanosejima School
Half of the children are from remote islands. The dormitory on Suwanose Island was completed early in the Tokara Islands.
Vacancies in the dormitory will not occur until the students who live there graduate from elementary or junior high school or transfer to another school. The toilets and rooms for boys and girls are separate.
We had permission from the Toshima Village Office and the Toshima Village Board of Education to interview for our manga, but
we did not receive a reply to our email inquiry to the school on Suwanose Island.
Even after I left, there was no contact (in a sense, it’s ongoing).
Setting aside Nakanoshima Island in Tokara, where I couldn’t greet the principal due to lack of time, I didn’t meet a single school staff member on Suwanose Island. I went as far as the school entrance, but children were playing in the playground. It was after school. There were adults there too, but it’s unclear if they were teachers.

That’s why
the school on Suwanose Island
doesn’t appear in Maharajima.

Among the seven islands of Toka, Suwanose Island was the only one where the percentage of unsociable people stood out.
Is March a month of heightened vigilance? But on the other islands, everyone greeted me! No one ignored me even once!
Many people who have moved to Suwanosejima come from distant regions such as Hokkaido.
I thought there would be many sociable people, but in fact, the opposite was true.
However, when seeing off the children leaving the island, the residents of Suwanose Island gathered in the largest number in Toka! I counted the number of people from the ferry.
What the heck! Their attitude is completely different! That’s why they are considered tsundere.
Also, I have the impression that school teachers are also in this photo. Who is it? The person who ignored the email. Conan, please identify them!

I stayed at a guesthouse on Suwanose Island.
The cleaning was thorough. All the appliances were there, and the Wi-Fi worked fine. Remote work is OK. The internet connection is stable.
