Summary of Akuseki Island, Tokara Islands, Kagoshima in Japan

AKUSEKIJIMA

The Tokara Islands consist of seven islands and form the village of Tokara.
Akusekijima is the fifth inhabited island reached by ferry from the mainland.

Toshima Village is an area that has been inhabited since before the Ryukyu era.
Akusekijima Island also has a long history, but few historical documents remain.
Miyazaki Prefecture’s ancient documents reveal that Tokara was known as “吐火羅Tokara.”
The name “Tokara” is derived from the ancient name “Tokara,” which is believed to have been used in the Ryukyu Kingdom era.

Bose, selected as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Three figures make up one set. Each has a different appearance. Only males are included.

Communication and radio wave conditions on Akusekijima Island

AKUSEKIJIMA

There are no particular problems with the villages.
It is not a nearly destroyed area like the village of Aogashima in Tokyo.
DOCOMO and Rakuten have no problems in villages throughout the Tokara Islands.
SoftBank has no problems in the area around the hot springs and campgrounds on Akusekijima Island, but DOCOMO and Rakuten have poor reception. Calls are frequently dropped, so the telephone line conditions are not good.

There are four shrines on Akusekijima Island.

金山(きんざん)神社:Kinzan Shrine

kodakara jima

It has a unique design not found on other islands in the Tokara Islands.
It is not seen in other parts of Japan either.
It is said that you should not pass under this torii gate (the design represents teeth).
However, when I asked the residents of Akusekijima Island, they said, “That’s what they say, but we don’t really think about it. We pass under it.” No curse.
When I actually went there, it was an open space with no pressure.

AKUSEKIJIMA

I guess that means that the mountain god and the sea god are enshrined here.
This stone was the only explanation available at the site.
The mountain god appears to be male, while the sea god appears to be female.
The seven islands of Tōkara do not share a common god, so this is also unique to Akusekijima.
The Tōkara Islands are characterized by a society that respects individuality in a positive sense, with no concept of island unity.

Accommodation on Akusekijima: The WiFi connection is poor in the two-story rooms of the guesthouse. The signal does not reach there.

There are four guesthouses. Reservations can only be made by phone.
If you use an app that offers free calls or international calls, your number will tend to be displayed as “unknown.”
A person from Takarajima told me that if your number is displayed as “unknown,” no one in Takara will answer your call (because there have been fraudulent calls in Takara).

Only one other guesthouse (a village-managed facility) accepts online reservations.
When I visited Ira, I called the guesthouses every day for several days, but I couldn’t get through.

There is a dog that barks a lot, kept 20 meters away. It is connected by a collar, but it barks even when it is more than 20 meters away and out of sight.
People who are afraid of dogs may not be able to pass by the entrance of this inn.
Meals are included.

Minshuku 西荘(Nishiso). Ira stayed there for one night.

This was all I had for lunch. No seconds.

All the guesthouses on Akusekijima Island serve small portions.

Nishisou doesn’t go fishing, so they didn’t have the sashimi that other guesthouses on Akusekijima Island serve.

The kitchen door. There was no sign on it, so I opened it by mistake. The Nishisou family also cooks their meals in this kitchen. The wife is from the Kanto region.

・Breakfast is optional. Decide at check-in.
・Dinner starts at 7:30 p.m.
・I called the inn nearly 10 times in the afternoon and morning, but no one answered the phone.
→They are often away for long periods of time, but the phone does not switch to voicemail, so outsiders cannot tell.
・Later, I was able to stay at the inn through an acquaintance of Mr. Nishisou.
・Each guest had their own room. Recently, they have returned to allowing multiple guests to stay in one room.
• Port (round-trip) and hot spring (one-way) shuttle service available.
The port shuttle waits for the disembarkation time and calls out to you. For the hot spring shuttle, a phone call is required upon departure, but the DOCOMO and Rakuten signals were poor, and the call dropped three times.

There are several reviews on Google saying that the proprietress is cold, but I didn’t find her to be that way when I spoke to her directly. She is actually a cheerful woman who loves to talk. People from the Toshima Village Office often stay here, so it may be difficult for the general public to make a reservation.
You can call anytime, and someone will answer the phone. Minshuku Aoba

南海荘:Nankai-so

The food reputation is the worst on AkusekijimaIsland (according to Google reviews).

Not only here, but guesthouses on Akusekijima Island tend not to put much effort into food.

Guests don’t compare it to other islands in the Tokara Islands. The average price for accommodation with meals on Akusekijima Island is around 7,000 yen, but on Nakanoshima Island it’s 12,000 yen, right?

If you don’t have enough food and drink, you can buy it at the shop, but it’s better to accept that as the Akusekijima Island stance.
